Thessaloniki: a visit at the Orfanotrofio squat

Orfanotrofio_ThessalonikiOn 26th December we visited the Orfanotrofio Squat in Thessaloniki’s Toumba district. A place that was squatted and is now administrated by refugees and the “Anti-authoritarian Space” [1] as well as other active people from Thessaloniki.

About the history

The plan to collectively organize a project like this emerged in September 2015. Connections and contacts between refugees and activists from Thessaloniki were established through the “No border kitchen” in Eidomeni. Together opportunities for meeting and living spaces were sought. Because the border closed three weeks ago (see also part 2 of our report) the creation of a self-organized space got necessary. For many people it became obvious that immediate action was inevitable. Consequently refugees that were rejected at the Macedonian border squatted together with people of the „Anti-authoritarian Space“, the so called ‘Orfanotrofio’. The church owned property was already squatted once in 2013.Three weeks ago, priests together with the cops, threatened to evict the place which did not happen yet. An anarchist comrade estimates the situation right now to be relatively relaxed. According to her, the cops have no reason to evict the place, because there seems to be no apparent political perspective nor will to create spaces for refugees and other socially marginalized groups. Nevertheless, it remains a squatted place and therefore is never absolutely safe. [Read More]

Thessaloniki: Call for international support against the auction of VIOME, November 17-24

Dear friends:

As a result of the legal battle waged against the VIOME workers collective, the state-appointed trustee is now organising a series of auctions with the aim of liquidating the plot of land on which the VIOME factory is located. A possible sale of the land would create the legal ground for evicting the workers from the factory.

Thessaloniki: A call for support of the struggle of VIOME

Dear solidarity supporters,

we would like to inform you about the latest developments in the struggle of the workers of VIOME [previously on S!N].

As you know, for four years now we have been fighting for our life and dignity. We, the workers, have chosen to create social alliances. We have rejected the proposals made by various political organizations to have an “exclusive” relationship with our struggle and direct it following narrow partisan criteria. Nevertheless, we have always all accepted invitations to speak and communicate.

Ioannina, Greece: Antiviosi squat reoccupied

In the morning hours of January 18th, 2015, some 50 comrades reoccupied the Antiviosi squat in the city of Ioannina, which had been evicted in August 2013.

On Tuesday evening, January 27th, the first demonstration since the reoccupation of the Antiviosi squat was carried out in the neighbourhood. The demonstration was lively, with much chanting of slogans. Nearly 100 comrades began to march from the squat, walked the surrounding streets and distributed texts regarding the reoccupation. Demonstrators who were in the front held a banner which read: “The flame we lit has flared up and can’t be put out – Antiviosi squat will stay – Solidarity with the squats.” [Read More]

Athens: Announcement by Kouvelou squat

Today, August 1st, one hundred Golden Dawn members attacked our squat, the Epavli Kouvelou, with the tolerance of the Greek police.

This was not a random incident, but rather happened during their planned motorized demo which started from their now-closed offices in Neo Irakleio, and headed to their new offices in Maroussi. Thirty comrades were inside the squat during the attack. Although we were outnumbered, we successfully repelled this prolonged–organized attack (the neo-Nazis were waving helves and knives, and carried collapsible batons, makeshift shields, etc.). Numerous police forces (MAT anti-riots squads, and DELTA motorcycle units) let the Golden Dawn members act undisturbed all this time (15 minutes), and were deployed in the area only after the neo-Nazis were gone; it was then that the cops surrounded the squat. The frantic attack (of the Golden Dawn members) caused damages to cars parked in the surroundings of the squat, while some of the comrades who were in the space were slightly injured. Neighbours stood in solidarity, provided us with first aid and remained outside the squat until the cops pushed them away. [Read More]

Athens: Shots Fired at K*VOX Squat

In the early hours of Tuesday, June 3rd, at about 02:30, unknown people fired at least 5 shots at the main entrance of the squatted social centre K*VOX. Two of the bullets pierced the outer metal blinds, shattering the glass front entrance door. [see photo] Luckily, at the time, no comrade was inside the squat.

Lately, the K*VOX —along with residents, collectives and fighters from the neighbourhood— has taken a series of initiatives to act against the mafia gangs and the drug trade in Exarchia, which is carried out with the police’s tolerance and cover-up.

Crete (Greece): Interview with a comrade from Evagelismos Squat

Greece has a long history of anti-authoritarian struggle that has provided inspiration for anarchists across the globe. Recently, I spent time in Greece to learn from comrades there about their experiences in anti-authoritarian organization and in particular establishing squats and self-organized spaces as centers of resistance, or autonomous zones. What follows is an interview with Carpe diem, from Evagelismos squat in Heraklion, Crete.
