UK: Whatever they say squatting will stay!

October 1 2011 marked one year since the Kraakverbod made squatting illegal in the Netherlands. However, hundreds of people still squat and will continue to squat.

With squatting in the UK coming under threat, join us to hear 3 squatters from Amsterdam talk next week in several cities across the UK about squatting before the ban, resistance to the criminalisation and what’s been happening since the Kraakverbod became law.

London: Squat exhibition opening in Tufnell Park/Holloway

In response to badly biased mainstream media coverage, the threat of new laws criminalising squatting, and the Dale Farm eviction, a new squat exhibition will open this week to offer the public an alternative viewpoint and show the positive side of squatting, and its connection to providing solutions rather than causing problems.

In a perfect example of how squatting can be a positive experience, the organisers have held conversations and meetings with the current owner of the building and have not only negotiated a temporary stay with the opening of the exhibition to the public, but also the possibility of some rent-free space at a local theatre school to continue the exhibition on an ‘official’ basis.

London: Solidarity gathering for the anarchists accused in the “caso bombas” in Chile

London – SOLIDARITY GATHERING FOR THE ANARCHISTS ACCUSED IN THE “CASO BOMBAS” IN CHILE

from: http//http://actforfreedomnow.wordpress.com/2011/04/28/solidarity-gathering-for-the-anarchists-accused-in-the-caso-bombas-london-u-k/

28/04/2011 – A few individuals gathered yesterday at the Chilean Embassy in central London as a small token of solidarity to the Anarchist comrades in Chile (on their 65th day of hunger strike).

A banner was opened that read FREEDOM TO THE ANARCHIST COMRADES IN CHILE, ACCUSED IN THE “CASO BOMBAS” ON HUNGER STRIKE SINCE 21/2/11-. Some went into the embassy and threw flyers into most offices and entrance area while screaming IMMEDIATE FREEDOM TO THE CHILEAN ANARCHISTS ACCUSED IN THE CASO BOMBAS CASE!. Fliers were also given to passersby and workers in hard hats on the scaffolding of a building opposite, who broke into a shout of FREEDOM! with fists raised (for them it was a bit of a joke) along with the comrades.

April 28th, 2011

Breaking news, more updates as we receive them:

A spokesman for the group said “We didn’t trust the British government to properly seize the Gaddafi regime’s corrupt assets, so we took matters into our own hands.”

London: An empty police station is getting squatted

Monday 11 October 2010
http://london.indymedia.org/articles/5654

A police station has been squatted in London in retaliation against police oppression.

What follows is a ‘communique’ from the occupied to the occupiers:

Squat
470 High Road Leytonstone

‘This is for everyone who has suffered injustice at the hands of the police.

This is for everyone who has been robbed by a banker,

This is for every soldier who was sent to war on lies.

This is for every refugee who is hounded for having there homes destroyed.

This is for the people who sleep on the streets on the outside of empty buildings.

THIS IS FOR YOU

RISE UP NOW! IT’S NOW OR NEVER…’

Priests and Chainsaws Revisited

At 5am on Thursday, 15th October, 2009, the rampART Creative Centre and Social Space was evicted by 45 police with chainsaws and, remarkably, a Church of England vicar. Three people and a dog were inside.

The eviction marks the end of nearly five and a half years of occupation, during which rampART has served as a landmark for the social centres movement in London and a venue for a diverse range of events including political meetings, workshops, info cafes, fundraising parties and the London Freeschool.

The eviction, significantly, happened on the same day that Non Commercial House, a freeshop operating out of a building in nearby Commercial Street, lost their case against eviction and a week after the collective occupying 2a Belgrade Road in Stoke Newington successfully defended the space from eviction by council bailiffs.

London: Resist FreeShop Eviction!

Non Commercial House has received 12 hours notice for it’s eviction after losing the court case last Thursday. At around 5pm an ‘Advanced Notice of Possession of Land’ was received from Marston High Court Enforcement Officers & Certified Bailiffs stating that occupiers are required to leave within the next 12 hours, before Friday 23rd October, 0800 hrs. Come and stay the night tonight at 165 Commercial Street ahead of the eviction or head down in the morning before 8am….

Non-Commercial House is located where the wealth of the City meets the poverty of East End, and the trendiness of arty Shoreditch. It is a project at the frontiers.

London: RampArt evicted this morning after over 5 years

15.10.2009 – 10:21

RampArt Social Centre was evicted at 5:30am this morning by 45 police, bailiffs and a priest.

After over 5 years and many eviction scares it has finally happened… 3 people and a dog were inside when police attempted to chainsaw the door. They also had climbers going up to the roof conjuring up memories of the raid during the G20 in April. Police are blocking the entrance to all three roads leading to the social centre with vans and their bodies. They are handing out a piece of paper with a telephone number to call to get belongings out of the building. A meeting will happen at Non Commercial House freeshop at 165 Commercial Street this evening, details to follow soon.

CALL OUT for help with South London’s Library House Social Centre

On the 17th September 2009 it will be a year that the Library House in Camberwell has been open as one of the few squatted social spaces in south london and we’d like to mark it with a call out for new faces, new ideas and new energy! The Library House holds regular weekly events and also hosts parties, gigs and benefits and we need help to run all of these. Our collective meets on tuesdays at 8pm where we discuss everything about the running of the social centre and it’s a good place to start for anyone who wants to come down to get involved.

Although we’ve had a good run of it we’re never sure of how long we’ll actually have here, some come down while you can. It would also be great if there were a crew ready to run another social centre when this project passes on, and the Library House would be a great place to meet likeminded people interested in running a social centre, something south london is sorely lacking in…

Check out our blog http://thelibraryhouse.wordpress.com/or just pop down. We’re at 52 Knatchbull Road, behind Minet Library. Tuesdays at 8pm are best, or just come round and say hi when you can.

Hope to see you soon…

London (UK): Non-commercial House is open for non-business…

The freeschool weekender on housing, squatting and gentrification has been and gone. It was a great success and it has left a beautiful building just waiting for another project to begin. So we call on all those interested in starting up a space to come and get involved…

People expressed an interest in continuing occupying in order to create a space that complemented the pre-existing projects in East London. With LARC, rampART, freedom, ASS and Belgrade Road all within close proximity we felt a giant free shop would be a nice idea. The building suits it with huge shop windows. Within such close proximity to the centre of finance a daytime space that promotes community without consumerism seems like a pleasant idea. A strong focus could be on attracting a crowd that wouldn’t generally go into squats and social centres by possibly making a space drug free (including alcohol and smoke) and having more family friendly activities. A free bicycle workshop will bring in peddlers by off the street and into the space (or the yard at least….) Regular workshops, infonights, cafes and a food coop were amongst other things discussed.

Bring items you no longer require that are clogging up your home. Take stuff you need that someone else has abandoned. Come along to get help fixing your bicycle…
