On the weekend of the 21th and 22nd of November we are welcoming people from Berlin to screen with us the very recent film about the Renter Rebels in the Berlin, a quite popular and diverse movement that emerged in the last couple of years and that struggles against massive gentrification and forced evictions of renters that take place at high pace. That weekend shall serve as space for discussion and exchange with the people from Berlin, about experiences being made in struggle, the urban restructuring that goes on in Berlin, and the self-organisation of all kinds of people to fight against it. Besides of being inspirational the events shall also be a space to come together and exchange ideas and experiences related to the unacceptable housing situation in Amsterdam and necessary housing struggles. Descent housing in its various forms and shapes and the city itself is not for profit but for us, the people, and a basic need of everybody independent of social status.
Why?
We would like to come together and exchange ideas and experiences related to the housing situation in Amsterdam, the gentrification, housing speculation and office building madness, that goes on and on with no real plan or actions to stop it, the criminalization of squatting since 2010 and the fact that people are drawn out from their homes, neighborhoods and social networks (not the ones at Facebook) if work is precarious or wages are too low to afford the high and rising rents, even in the social housing sector, while so called housing corporations like Ymere or De Key (just to name a few) intentionally empty their houses from low income renters in order to make more profits by privatizing or renovating them for a upper class renter or buyer segment.
The city’s politicians and parties are obviously neither interested nor capable in regulating this situation and apparently prefer that Amsterdam becomes an even more elitist city, whose urban development is solely drawn by economic factors and that propagate as the solution for those on the losing side the myth of the almost “natural” matter of fact that people should move around every couple of years if life becomes too expensive. In that way we are further individualised by not being capable of building any relevant local networks that supports a meaningful struggle against this conditions.
Descent housing in its various forms and shapes and the city itself is not for profit but for us, the people, and a basic need of everybody independent of social status. We hope to come together with our various backgrounds as renters, precarious and unemployed workers, students, renter activists and renter commitees, squatters, radicals, refugees, thus basically all of us that are negatively affected by the neo-liberal development of Amsterdam and to get organized in order to propose and realise alternatives and to resist the social cleansing that is threatening us.
