Amsterdam: New Policy. No Eviction for Emptiness…

As a squatter in Amsterdam, looking back on the past year is painful. 2019 dealt heavy blows to a movement that didn’t seem capable of much more than taking the beating. The city has lost its largest squats and despite numerous squatting actions, hardly any new buildings have survived the end of the year. What’s more, politicians tried to introduce a law at national level to further criminalise squatters while the media reported time and time again how afflicted property owners are being deceived repeatedly by squatters. To top it all off, the mayor concludes the year with a report on a new policy designed to implement a more rigorous approach to squatting.
There’s not much left to say beyond 2019 having been a rather grim year, making it difficult to paint a hopeful picture for squatting in Amsterdam in 2020.

Amsterdam: Bajesdorp celebrating free spaces

Bajesdorp Festival 2018, saturday 11 august, 14:00.

We in Bajesdorp are keeping an eye out as our neighbourhood is rapidly getting a facelift by gentrifiers. We are doing our utmost to keep the spirit of Bajesdorp alive through these changing times. We have made a strong effort over the years to prevent vacancy and keep the neighbourhood habitable, and to make sure we have a beautiful, diverse place to call home.

Every year we are excited to share our picturesque neighbourhood with our friends, lovers, (chosen) families, and other earth dwellers when we turn our home into a festival ground for everyone to enjoy. This year is no exception! We would love to see you all in Bajesdorp celebrating free spaces that are becoming an endangered species in Amsterdam. Come enjoy delicious food, refreshing drinks, thought-provoking stalls, wide range of music and the general gezelligheid of the Bajesdorp Festival 2018!

Amsterdam: Defend free spaces – last chance for Bajesdorp

Upcoming Wednesday (22.11) is our last chance to address the city of Amsterdam: Our message is clear: We want a social city and we won´t move for hotels, speculation and tax advantages.

Amsterdam without Free Spaces = Almere

Very short notice: We in Bajesdorp heard today (Monday) that we are on the council agenda upcoming Wednesday. The city council will finalize the ¨bestemmingsplan¨ of the area Bajesdorp is part of) of our area.
Quick update on our situation: The Bijlmer Bajes (the prison) got sold last September to a project developer to realize city expansion. After lobbying within the council, the city granted extra points to developers (there was a competition) who would take us into consideration.
AM won the competition. AM project development made us a ¨part¨ of their plan, even advertising with Bajesdorp festival in 2021. They promised us space within their plans and alternatively, another location for us to be, work and live.
However, in the last meeting we had with them, we were told that the majority of Bajesdorp will be sold off to a third party and that half of Bajesdorp will demolished in Februari 2018 due to tax advantages. That third party will eventually build a hotel on site in 2021, but apparently needs to demolish half of Bajesdorp including our social centre three years prior development.

Upcoming Wednesday (22.11) is our last chance to address the city of Amsterdam: Our message is clear: We want a social city and we won´t move for hotels, speculation, anti-kraak and tax advantages. [Read More]
