Barnstaple, North Devon: Local Pub Squatted

Residence of Forchers housing estate in Barnstaple, North Devon have occupied their pub The Borough Arms which is due to be knocked down to make way for flats as part of a “regeneration” scheme.

The locals have taken their building back and hope to save it from from the re-development as they highlight a lack of local facilities.

But locals have moved in and now a week on they’re asking Chichester Homes Developments to return the building so they can use it for community purposes.

A direct action protest is taking place in Barnstaple as residents of the Forches Estate fight to save their local pub.

Kevin Sharland looks out from a window of the pub saying the locals plan to stay inside until an agreement can be reached.

The Borough Arms is due to be knocked down and turned into flats but locals say the keys were left in the door at the weekend and so they’ve moved in to occupy the premises while they call for a judicial review into the planning decision.

Locals say they’re determined to preserve what they see as the heart of their community, as Seth Conway reports.
