About two a thousand families who squatted a land in Osasco (near the city of São Paulo) had been evicted this thursday, December 5th. The land, of fifty hectares, was used as rubbish deposit and clandestine cemetary and it is located in a noble region of the city, to the side of a golf field. After months of negotiation, the coordination of the homeless and the government of the state of São Paulo had agreed with a pacific withdrawal, with the removal of the squatters to a land that belongs to the state located in the city of Guarulhos (also near São Paulo). In the last thursday during the morning, the homeless complained of the absence of trucks and buses that would carried them to the land. Brazil: Homeless squat land in Osasco
Around 400 families squatted, in the early morning of 27th July, a plot of land near the neighbourhood of Cidade de Deus in Osasco, Sao Paulo. The number of families has already increased to 4000 in barely a week of occupation. The land, encompassing around 600.000 m2, was be being used to dismantle stolen cars and to bury the bodies of murdered people, several piles of bones have been found in the area, and as an unauthorised rubbish dump. Porto Alegre (Brazil): Squat opened (and left again) by anarchists
Demanding affordable housing and real action to address issues of homelessness and substandard housing in Brazil a group of anarchists broke off of the official world social forum march and squatted a three story house. The squat was organized by a coalition of Brazilian anarchist groups who wanted to show that Porto Alegre isn’t the social democratic paradise that the Workers Party (PT) makes it out to be. Guarulhos (São Paulo): Update about the squat “Anita Garibaldi”
At the last monday, August 20th 2001, the ROTA (police from Sao Paulo) raided the occupation Anita Garibaldi, in Guarulhos, at an operacion clearely ilegal: the police officers didn’t had any indentification and the number from the police cars was hided. At the time when the raid happen is also ilegal (the police in Brasil can not do a raid during the night). Totally equiped with guns, they beat up the squaters, and arrested one of them, saying that they had a mandate to arrest him – which was a lie. The people from the MTST(homeless workers moviment) that was infured has already press charges against the police, the lawyer from the MTST was able to release the person who was arrested and the OAB(The brazilian lawyers association)will open a process to investigate this police action. Guarulhos (Brazil): Giant landsquat “Anita Garibaldi”
Has been more than one month of resistance from one of the biggest occupation in South America. A land of 1.139.000 m2 in the city of Guarulhos, SP, Brazil, was occupied by more than 9.000 families(and 1.500 who still waiting to have a spot at the camp). The name of the camp is Anita Garibaldi and was made by the MTST (Movement of Homeless Workers) with the support of the MST (The Landless Movement). At the 4th day of occupation the owner asked a legal petition to get the land back, the homeless are following the process with the help of voluntaries lawyers from the section of Human Rights at the OAB (The Brazilian Lawyers Organization).
