Amsterdam (The Netherlands): March 2013 Joe’s Garage program

A deepening crisis, a social housing policy crushed, a constant precarisation of life and work, what a promising future. The masses aren’t dreaming any more. The glitter that has been fed to us by the government and the media won’t last for long.
We are not done with protesting and taking action. Knowing your rights and responsibilities when you are arrested is crucial. Joke Kaviaar will be tackling these issues during an info night. Throughout March, local activists and the many volunteers will take over Joe’s Garage to support various initiatives, SVZV (Support Group Women Without Papers), Riseup.net and Anarchists Against the Wall. Other local projects, LaRage, Roomtuintje Oostbos and Soweto will provide you a deeper insight on the neighbourhood. People eating, talking together, exchanging ideas, making projects, forgetting about the role models society is imposing…, all this and more is happening at Joe’s.
The monthly workshop about gender and sexuality, “It’s more than what’s in your pants”, is going on with “How to be a man? De-constructing masculinities“. Jeffrey is back for another speech and a film “Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema” with Frances. Also to be screened soon, The Joke, Repo Men and Micmacs.
Office Hours is the new weekly community event at Joe’s, every Tuesday between 11:00 and 15:00, to work in a quiet environment and abuse wireless Internet. The other weekly events, the Squatting Assistance, the Lonely Collective Day Cafe, the Give Away shop, the Vegazulu People’s Kitchen always need volunteers, even if you have little free time.

Can Dialectics Break Bricks Cinema: Frances Sunday March 3rd 2013, Movie night: Frances (Graeme Clifford, USA, 1982, 140′). In English. Screened by Jeffrey Babcock. Door open at 20pm, film begins at 21:00. The 1980s bio-pic about the restless and uncompromising Hollywood actress Frances Farmer. After being stopped one day for speeding she ended up getting into a fistfight with a policeman.

Benefiet Voku Soweto Monday March 4th 2013: Volkseten Vegazulu, Benefiet Voku Soweto, 19:00 pm. Creating A COMMUNITY OWNED social (and living) space. The housing association Soweto aims to do what the official ‘social housing corporations’ don’t deliver: to provide communities with affordable space for living, working, organising, talking politics and having fun. It all started with trying to legalize Joe’s garage in the squatted Pretoriustraat 28.

Benefiet Steungroep Vrouwen Zonder Verblijfsvergunning Thursday March 7th 2013: Volkseten Vegazulu, Benefiet Steungroep Vrouwen Zonder Verblijfsvergunning, 19:00 pm.

Rights and Duties when Under Arrest, an Infonight by Joke Kaviaar Sunday March 10th 2013, Rights and Duties when Under Arrest, an Infonight by Joke Kaviaar. Door opens at 20pm. Joke Kaviaar presents an infonight on your rights and responsibilities when you are arrested. Police deem arresting people for whatever reason as one of the main functions of their job and will always look for an excuse to lay charges, and they certainly have no love for activists or dissidents.

“How to be a Man – Deconstructing Masculinity” Workshop Friday March 15th 2013: Workshop, 18:30 pm. A real man is rational and calm. A real man is strong. A real man is focused. A real man strives to be a role model. A real man doesn’t look like a woman. A real man does not behave like a woman. A real man fights for his family and his country. A real man is… A real man does…
Being a “real” man ain’t easy. And not anyone can do it. But billions of people are sure trying very hard every day. To discuss what mainstream masculinity is and how it affects men…and the rest of the world, as well as how we can promote more inclusive models of masculinity or masculinities, join the workshop!

Movie night: Repo Men Sunday March 17th 2013, Movie night: Repo Men (Miguel Sapochnik, USA, 2010, 111′). Door open at 20pm, film begins at 21:00. Imagine a near-future society where legalised corporate murder is the norm. This is the world of the Repo Men, who are authorised to repossess the organs of people who default on their repayments, with bloody and often fatal consequences. Darkly comic, slickly plotted and action-packed, this is a smart satire on the sometimes stark choice between having a conscience and collecting a paycheck.

LaRage Benefit, Support the Squatting Scene Monday March 18th 2013: Volkseten Vegazulu, LaRage Benefit, Support the Squatting Scene, 19:00 pm. “On January 27th, we squatted the Cornelis Drebbelstraat 35 which was empty over several years. Now we are living there and want to make great use out of it. How are we going to continue ?
The first priorities for the following time are repairing and fixing different things in the house, to make a usable, living place out of it.

The film is billed as a “satire on the world arms trade. Micmacs links Keaton, Chaplin and Tati to the surreal, stylised worlds of Lynch, Burton and Gilliam and draws on everything from film noir to Sergio Leone. It is lit in a hallucinatory fashion, golden by day, dreamy by night, shot with lenses that happily disconcert the viewer.
