revolutionary greetings

Lets begin by introducing ourselves We are the collectif Solidarios con Itoiz, from Euskalerria (the basque country). We are currently fighting against a dam/electric powerplant project in the north east of the province of Navarra. The Dam project would drown 9 villages and along with those 5 natural reserve areas,3 of them being special bird protection zones. Few regions in Europe have such a rich fauna and flora than those where they now want tobuild their monstruos dam! It is important to note that apart from the 9 villagesthat would disapear, 6 others would become completely unreachable. Two valleys would be left unliveable toany form of human animal or vegetal life! Our collective is fighting the damming project for about 5 years. Our approach is public, non violent and direct action. In this period we have carried out about40 different actions of various types, the most successful being to cut the electricity wires of the concrete factory set up to build the dam walls. The works on the dam where thereby delayed for 1 year. As a consequence of this accion 8 members of the collective whre arrested and held for 2 months and, 2 years later tried and condemned to 5 years of imprisonnement. The judgement was totally political, the judges, servants of power, had to go back as far as 1874 to find a precedent allowing them justifytheir sentence. Time has now come for the condemned the enter prison. Although the collective has always accepted legal and other consequences of their actions, we think that it is now the right moment to publically denounce the Itoiz dam project and the political judgement of 5 years of imprisonnement against 8 of the collectivesmembers. Their were tried and condemned for stopping a not only irrational and devastory but also illegal project. It was declared illegal by a national spanish court , this verdict being confirmed by the spanish supremecourt later on. We also want to denounce the judges that condemned 8 people to 5 years of imprisonnement, perverting the law in that way and the spanish governement not even able to set a stop to the constuction works afterdeclaring them illegal!

For that reason we are touring Europe since September 1999. We carried out 2 actions on this tour: climbing the infamous “millenium wheel” in london and rallying at the International court of justice in the Hague giving about 30 video conferences.

It is time to strike again: With this email we would like to invite to a cyberaccion against all public and private entities involved in the Itoiz dam project! targets;political parties supporting the dam: Union del Pueblo Navarro (UPN): email: gp- http://www.upn.org

At 29-1-00 there will be a squatters demonstration in Amsterdam. The demonstration will start at 14.00h at the Westermarkt.

Reason for this demonstration is the threath from the citycouncil of Amsterdam to evict the ‘Kalenderpanden’at the Entrepotdok. The council wants to sell the building to a project developer who wants to build luxury apartments. Research has shown before that plans for social housing in these buildings are well possible.

At this moment there are 15 people living in the squats and there is a concert hall, cinema, theatre, bar, gallery, voku, etc.

Squatters of Saxegaardsgate 11 don’t give up.

Tuesday two weeks ago Saxegaardsgate 11 was evicted. The police didn’t use violence on the ten people sitting inside the building. This was probably due to the massive support of the neighbourhood, included politicians. The people who showed up on the streets got another treatment as the Norwegian television was able to broadcast. Immediately after the eviction the council demolished the building. Saxegaardsgate 11 was just squatted for three intensive weeks. At the beginning it was clear it would be difficult to win from the powerfull opponent. But this doesn’t make it less valuable to fight the struggle. For the squatters this is a case of principles. Together with the squatting of Hausmannsgate 40 they maybe helped reviving the dying squattersmovement over there.

After the eviction of Saxegaardsgate 11, some activist wants to move to Hausmannsgate 34, the neighbourbuilding to the other squat. The squatters at Hausmannsgate are told that they have to move before the 14th. Hopefully a new squat action will obstruct the evictionplans

Squat ‘Het Paard’ in Amsterdam will be expropriated

Squat ‘Het Paard’ in Amsterdam will be expropriated

The ‘Paard van Amstel’ is a squat opposite the councilhouse in Amsterdam. It has been squatted several times the last twenty years. The last eviction took place in july this year (see also http://squat.net/uk/news/horseherkraak160799.htmland older news at http://squat.net/uk/news). This eviction was ordered by the council. Four people were arrested and finally sentenced to one month in prison. The gable of the building was severely damaged by the container which carried the riotcops to the roof of the heavily barricaded building. A few days after the eviction the Amsterdam squattersmovement reacted with a renewed squat-action. This time we wouldn’t let them kick us out anymore!

The monumental building is in bad condition due to speculation and illegal demolition activities from the owner. The council never used it’s power against this. They were only concerned about preventing getting squatters on the other side of the river the ‘Amstel’.

The last squat-actions helped waking up the people who want to take care for monuments and want to do something against the housingshortage in Amsterdam.

Expropriation is not the end of the story. A neighbourhoodorganisation, a housinggroup and the squatters want affordable housing in the building. Most of the affordable tenements in the ‘Rembrandtplein’-neighbourhood will be sold or became increasingly expensive. We want a compensation for this. Renovating the Paard and making cheap housing for starters at the housingmarket (as the council calls this) is a necessary step to take.

The council expects that it will be ‘impossible’ to build cheap housing in the Paard. They want luxury appartment. The struggle is not finished yet…

The paard (horse) has got a digital stable at http://squat.net/paard/index.html

SQUATTERS’ WEEK OF SUCCESS ENDS WITH IMPASSE – LANDLORD RENEGES ON AGREEMENTS

After a successful building take-over on Sunday November 28th by anarchists, “The Squat” at 914 Virginia Ave, housed activists all week who were in town to protest the WTO. After six days a deal was made with the owner and all the squatters left without incidence.

by SCOTT WINN

After a successful building takeover on November 28th by anarchists, “The Squat” at 914 Virginia Avenue provided housing all week for a group of activists in town to protest the WTO. As many as a hundred people slept in the makeshift home each night.

Despite the City’s decision to shut-off electricity and water on the first night, the squatters prepared communal meals, had strategy meetings to plan for negotiations with the building’s owner, and participated in the larger WTO protests. After six days, a deal was negotiated with the owner, and all of the squatters departed without incident.

Much to the disappointment of building owner Wah Lui, no arrests were made.

The squatters were subsequently provided with housing by the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) at the Julie Apartments, in downtown Seattle.

“So we had this noon deadline by the police to get out. Around the corner were Metro vans filled with what looked like a hundred cops in riot gear,” recalled takeover participant Grimes on Saturday. “Then all of a sudden Sharon (Lee, Director of LIHI) and Bob (Santos, Regional Director of HUD) came running up and said that a deal had been made.”

The squatters had worked hard to ensure that the building would remain available for homeless and low-income citizens after their departure.

In the end, it was agreed that SHARE/WHEEL, an organization of homeless women and men, would be able to use the building for an unspecified amount of time as a temporary and emergency shelter. Santos said that some HUD money might be available to support the project.

Negotiations were also begun regarding LIHI’s purchase of another Lui property, the Park Seneca Apartments in downtown Seattle, for conversion into mutual housing. Almost immediately after this deal was confirmed, Lui rescinded the agreement.

Throughout the week Lui had displayed this sort of instability repeated, making decisions and then changing his mind. He had professed support for aspects of the squatters’ protest, and then confiscated their battery-powered lamps and stated his hope that they would be killed in a confrontation with police.

Lui was angry that no arrests were made, and demanded that the squatters be punished. He threatened to go to the Julie Apartments to try and arrest people himself. He was told by LIHI that he was not to enter the premises. Finally, fearing a confrontation with Lui, the police were called regarding filing a complaint against Lui.

“He (Lui) has actually shown a bit of sympathy to the causes we’re working on,” Grimes said. “What we have a problem with is the system that all these people participate in, where a few control some pretty valuable resources while there are others that have fucking nothing.” – scott winn

Werkhuis 2b-squat illegally evicted

Buildingcompany ‘De Wit’ tried to evict ‘Vrankrijk’ before. Then their company-building burnt down and they withdrew their actions. We are surprised that they want another confrontation with squatters, just at the moment they become active in Amsterdam again. Here a report about the squat in Zaandam (north-west of Amsterdam):

  Report

First off the werkhuis 2b is the only squat in the centre Zaandam, all the others are anti-squat. It is here in the 2b that i and a few others provide a working space for those brave enough to deal with the dark and cold. carpentry, painting, music and rites of the spirit, this sort of thing. it was squated over six months ago by a leftist political party called de rosa as a statment to the citizens of zaandam, with no intention to have anyone live there. one thing led to another and squaters from two evicted houses ended up staying there until they gave in to signing contracts to get their homes back. i arrived shortly thereafter. last friday there was quite the wind storm that blew a big peice of the roof off next door. not my roof, not my problem, or so i thought. i left for a’dam and came back the next day to a distressed bunch of friends who told me that my locks had been changed the night before when no one was home. the police were lathargic, laughed and told us to take it back. so we did on sunday night, it went smoothly and quietly. i only confirmed who did it this morning. a building company called de wit. they used my place as a way to get to the roof next door. de wit owns the block of buildings that de 2b is a part of.

the address is:

werkhuis #2b

Anarchists: They play by different rules

by Jim Brunner Seattle Times staff reporter

These are the anarchists’ house rules: no graffiti, no drugs or alcohol, smoking allowed only on the roof. And no violence – at least not inside the Seattle building occupied by dozens of them since Sunday.

Outside is another matter. Authorities say the hooded youths who seized two floors of a building at Virginia Street and Ninth Avenue may be among those responsible for the spree of smashed windows and slashed tires that marred what many protesters hoped would be a week of peaceful demonstrations against the World Trade Organization.

But yesterday, the anarchists, often polite and well-spoken, displayed their new home to journalists and said seizing it was a political statement about homlessness and the lack of ow-income housing.

With the Seattle police West Precinct just one block away, entry to the so-called “Autonomous Zone” is strictly controlled. As reporters waited outside, the anarchists barked commands through two-way radios. “I need to speak to Sgt. Pepper Spray, over,” said one, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and bandana over his face and introducing himself as “Black.” “Front door, we are clear, open up now,” came the response. The reporters were hustled inside by hooded young men who quickly slammed the door and replaced the boards barricading it.

Inside, the anarchists go by code names: “Echo,” “Squash,” “Lincoln” and just plain “Ben.” As many as 150 sleep on blankets and sleeping bags on the wooden floors and eat donated soup, bread and potatoes. Atop the roof, they hoisted their flag, “The Jolly Worker” – a skull crossed with a hammer and saw.

They came from all over the country to protest the WTO. And now they want to stay in their new-found home long after this week. The building’s owner, Wah Lui, doesn’t think much of their political views – he just wants them out: “Their rationale is so juvenile, there’s no point in even discussing it with them. Life is so simple to them.”

The city cut off power and water to the building after it was occupied, so Lui gave the squatters battery-powered lights, fire extinguishers and a portable toilet. “But that doesn’t mean I’m a nice guy,” he said. “I don’t want them to stay as my guests.”

Lui said the building was not going to waste, as protesters claim. He said he had applied for city permits to install an elevator, renovate the building and rent it out as artist studios.

Police spokeswoman Christie-Lynne Bonner said police have more pressing concerns at the moment. But at least one person who had been staying in the building was arrested. Late Tuesday,a masked youth held by police yelled to friends, “Go to the squat and tell them 007′s been busted.”

The utility shutdown has hurt the building’s two paying tenants, small businesses that occupy the first floor and basement, directly under the anarchists’ abode. “I’m not too happy about a bunch of punks taking over and putting me out of business,” said John Citoli, who runs a software and book-packaging business in the building.

“Ben,” 20, a dreadlocked man from Minneapolis, said he feels no guilt about trespassing: “Owners get the money to buy property by employing workers and making money off the labor of others without working themselves.”

He added that he did not participate in the violence blamed on many of the anarchists. “I didn’t come here to break things. I came here to communicate a political message,” he said.

But others said it’s OK to smash the windows of corporate stores such as NikeTown to make a political statement. “What individuals do when they leave this household, that’s not up to us,” “Black”said<p>

Squatters vacate downtown building after ‘deal’

by Chris Solomon Seattle Times staff reporter

The group of young, self-styled anarchists, homeless advocates and others who took up residence for nearly one week in a building near Virginia Street and Ninth Avenue danced on its tar roof yesterday, cheered by a verbal agreement that housing for the homeless would replace them after their departure.

But not long after the two dozen squatters and their supporters slammed the door and melted away, warmed by the sun and their victory, the building’s still-furious owner hedged on any deal. “This is like someone putting a gun to your head and telling you to donate to the Salvation Army,” owner Wah Lui said, still fuming at the group’s tactics and the lack of any punishment.

Young people took over the building north of downtown last Sunday night. Since then, a variety of protesters – as many as 150 – have used “the squat” as a place to sleep, eat and congregate. Many called themselves anarchists, and at least one resident yesterday had been arrested last week for vandalism.

But most said violence and chaos were not their goal. The word anarchos is Greek for “without a leader,” and residents said that better explained their opposition to hierarchies that rob people of their voices and access to basic rights such as affordable – or even free – housing.

Though some of the squatters came from out of town, several were from Seattle. One of them, who went by the name “Black,” said he was homeless, despite being enrolled at Seattle Central Community College and having a 3-month-old baby.

The squatters said the building was derelict and should be used for housing. Lui, who recently bought the building, said he has plans to renovate it. The city cut off power and water after the building was occupied, chasing out Lui’s handful of tenants. Lui gave the trespassers a portable toilet, fire extinguishers and battery-powered lights. The police would not evict them last week.

Under a deal brokered by Seattle’s Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) and Bob Santos, regional director of the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development, Lui tentatively agreed to let two homeless-advocacy groups lease part of the building, provided the young people inside never returned. About 25 beds also would be made available for one week to people at the Julie Apartments across the street from the occupied building.

Lui was also infuriated by a mention in LIHI’s agreement yesterday that he would negotiate to sell a 50-unit apartment building on Seneca Street that he owns. The squatters and homeless advocates, meanwhile, didn’t seem concerned that they had nothing in writing from Lui.They pointed to the 1992 occupation of the 100-plus-unit Pacific Hotel and the Arion Court downtown – two instances of public pressure that forced building owners to donate or sell the buildings for use as low-income housing.

  anti-WTO actions reports in France.

November 30th, anti-WTO actions reports in France.

In Toulouse : In toulouse (4th biggest french city), small groups of people invaded the main commercial street of the town with a sound-system and hung big anti WTO cardboards on christmas decorations with long sticks as subversive christmas fathers were busy giving capitalist rotten fruits to passer-by. We’re now waiting for other french action reports on N30. In Dijon : 40 activists occupied the Dijon Industry and Business institute (chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie) and one bank agency ‘place du théâtre’ in the financial center of Dijon in order to close down these 2 key-structure of capitalism. While ten of them wearing D.I.Y ” enslaved by money ? “‘shirts where blocking off the entrances of the two buildings using D-locks and arm-tubes, other groups where throwing fake blood and money on the side-walks, gluing anticapitalists/anti-WTO/proalternative posters on the walls and shops around, puttin’up a big ’30th of november, global day of action against capitalism and WTO’ banners and other assorted cardboards, playing loud metallic drums, screaming in (mégaphone ?), giving free tea, coffeee and flyers about capitalism, non-violent direct action, anarchism and sustainable D.I.Y alternatives, and telling people why we, as thousand people over the world, were disrupting capitalists structures today. . I don’t think that I need to tell more about banks and their key role on these report (I sent here our flyer in french about ‘why targeting banks ?’), but for those not knowing abbout the french situation klet’s tell one or two things about the way the CCI (Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie) works : As the WTO is an institution that let big corporation take control over people and the earth, the Chambre de Commerce et d’Industries, french business institutes, are powerfull local and so-called ‘public’ institutions where the big corporations can directly lobby the state, get agreements and money to achieve their dirty projects and dictate their laws and conceptions on society. After one hour and an half of blockade, the bank had to close definitively , the people of the CCI not happy at all of us attacking their public image were getting more and more agressive and the arrival of more and more cops van shows clearly that our eviction was planned. After a few more discussions with the cop’s bosses, the cops evicted brutally all the people that had gathered around the 4 chained inside the C.C.I. and tried to cut the locks and arm-tubes with knives and bolt-croppers. The 4 people chained decided after a while to delock themselves, seeing clearly that the cops, who couldnt manage to cut the D-locks, were getting more and more violent and were hurting them, even in front of the local medias,. As in London or Seattle, we had to face violent cops ready to protect corporate business interests and repress by all means people expressing without violence their right to protest. State repression won’t make us give up our fight ! This action was covered by the local and a few national medias. The french N30 network : A few weeks before the N30, a french network of autonomous groups that helped welcoming the InterContinenetal Caravan and willingfull to build an alternative political network based on P.G .A principles, sent the first issue of their newsletter ‘sans-titres’ to a few hundreds diverse groups, networks, squats, ‘eco-village’ around France with J18 reports, pamphlets on capitalism and non-violent direct action and N30 call for action. In France, most of the big official political structures (big unions, Conferation Paysanne or political party inside the present government as the M.D.C or the Communist Party along with N.G.O’s) had decided to organize a big unitarian demonstration in Paris and smaller demonstrations around France on the 27th of november. The general message bringed by most of these politicians of really reformist views on capitalism and WTO based on lobbying, the will to obtain a ‘citizen control of the WTO’ and go back to a stronger centralised state. I mean that’s what their message seemed to us and the way most of the french ‘left’ works presently on liberalism with such ideas as the ‘Tobin tax’. That’s one of the reason why, after the last meeting of the french post-IntercontinentalCaravan network, early november, we thougt it was important to bring fresh air, new ideas and build a network with clearer and more radical views about capitalism, the changes that need to be done, ways of action based on non-violent direct action and the creation of local sustainable alternatives… We still dont really know how many actions got organized on the 30th of november but the newsletter received a lot of positive enthousiastic feedback, so the network will hopefully grow stronger and more diverse during the next few month. The lack of communication between groups working on various issues (GMO, antifascism, work, illegal immigrants, anti-car, third world or environmental issues, squats or eco-cmmunities…) being on of the main problems at present in France, that would be a great thing to achieve. Reports or commentaries on french N30 can be send to Maloka B.P. 536 – 21014 Dijon cedex – email : website : http://www.chez.com/maloka/ tel : 0033 + 380 77 09 40 fax :00 33 + 380 71 42 99

The next newsletter will be done in Toulouse, send your reports, news, tips before the 20th of december to ‘Le clande, 9 rue Queven 31 000 Toulouse/ tel : 05 61 22 92 35). As the first one, it will be copied and distributed locally by the various french groups that wants to get involved. The next french network meeting will be early january in Paris.

Postscript : During the french unitarian anti-WTO demonstartion in Paris on the 27th of november, the Mouvement des Citoyens (MDC) militants were kicked out of the demonstration by the french antifascist action (SCALP). Chevènement, nationalist MDC’s leader and present french home secretary, lead the most repressive politic on illegal immigrants since two years. The same thing happened in Bordeaux.

Social anger and protests lead to Copenhagen riots

Social anger and protests lead to Copenhagen riots

The night between the 7th 8th November 1999 a lot of people got fed up with the racism of the Danish state.

At approximately 22.00 at the between the 7th and the 8th a group of second generation immigrants, punks and other people joined together at the old working-class neighbourhood of Nørrebro. As a reaction to the extradition of citizen of Turkish origin, whom have lived in Denmark all his life. The get-to-gether resulted in a riot which resulted in smashing windows of Banks, and other capitalist and multi- national corporations. After one and a half hour the police arrive at the scene, which put a lit on tempers for a while. After two hours, things exploded in virtual war in the streets of Nørrebro.

Finally the police reacted with heavy teargassing which resulted in people were forced to spread out over the neighbourhood.

The police arrested one man. They are holding him back for 11 days in isolation.

Protesters damage storefronts on Copenhagen street

Several dozen protesters smashed store windows on a downtown Copenhagen street, set two vehicles afire and threw rocks at police late Sunday night.

The incident took place in an immigrant neighborhood and reportedly was set off by the recent decision to expel a Turkish-born nationalized Dane who was convicted of a crime.

About 100 storefronts were smashed by rocks, iron bars and baseball bats.

At around 1 a.m. Monday, police were reestablishing control by their presence on Noerebrogade and nearby streets, but were not directly confronting the protesters, who generally ran away when authorities arrived on the scene.

5 buildings re-squatted in innercity of Amsterdam

5 buildings re-squatted in innercity of Amsterdam

In 1991 a big complex of old and rotten monuments were squatted between the Dam-square and Central Station. The squatters were thrown out in december 1993. ABN-AMRO-bank wanted to build a huge shoppingcenter, luxury appartments, parking, officebuilding and Hotel. They needed thousand riot-cops in two eviction-’sessions’ to get the squatters out.

Although there was strong resistance against the plans from people in the neighbourhood and the squatters the bank wanted to continue with their ridiculous project.

As to be expected the shoppingcenter became a failure. Nowadays everything is empty including some renovated monuments. Also three not renovated monuments were empty because archeologists found an old castlewall under them. The council took over these houses and is preparing plans for a museum under the buildings.

The three monuments in bad condition are squatted as well as two renovated ones which were empty for a few years now. The renovated ones gave acces to the empty shoppingcomplex. The hundred squatters who were at the action by accident walked into an empty Mc-donalds. They decided not to squat this but by then the police wanted to evict the houses connected to the shopping center. The police did not succeed. At this moment there are riot-cops ready at the policestation twohundred meters from the squats.
